Performing is one of the best things about being a member of Love Soul Choir. And we think that taking part in performances that support or encourage important conversations around things like sustainability and Black history only adds to that performance experience. 💯
This month at Love Soul Choir, our members have had the opportunity to perform at events which have supported both of these conversations.
Big Sustainability Expo 2023 💚
As a choir, we’re all about our commitment to being more sustainable. We’re really proud of the work we do around sustainability and protecting our planet. That’s one of the reasons we were so pleased to be asked to perform at The Big Sustainability Expo 2023 which took place in October.
This event celebrates all the wins and accomplishments of businesses when it comes to all things sustainability. We had an absolute blast, heard some incredible feedback from attendees and were excited to see local legend Fred Dinenage at the event too!
Black History Month 💕
At the beginning of November, we performed at Westquay Shopping Centre to support Black History Month. Love Soul Choir has been supporting Black History Month South for over a decade and we were thrilled to support again this year.
During our performance, the wonderful Tyler (part of the BHM South team) read a poem called ‘Still I Rise’ by Maya Angelou, which is based around Angelou’s experiences as a Black woman in America. We wanted to share this excerpt:
“Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.”
We’re on a continual journey to become a more diverse and inclusive choir so we’re grateful to the Black History Month South team for working with us once again this year! 💜
