When I discovered Love Soul Choir through an internet search, I was immediately excited by the vibe and the professionalism. My friend and I had been going to another choir for over 10 years and needed a change and a new challenge. We discussed it after a few drinkies on New Years Eve and decided that in 2020 we would try to do something everyday that scared us! So we applied for an audition.
I got my date confirmed so then the pressure was on. I had never auditioned for anything before so I was nervous. I had spend many years attending a performing arts school and performing in shows etc. both singing and dancing but never had to audition. I had also recently performed at Carnegie Hall which was massive but I still didn’t have to audition to be included in that.
So, I practised a few songs and deliberated over which one was right before narrowing them down to two. I enrolled my Mum (who is very musical) to audition me with both songs and she felt that ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ from The Wizard of Oz suited my voice the best. Its a childhood favourite too so I was comfortable with that. I was actually more terrified singing to my mum for the first time on a one to one basis than I was eventually singing to Dan. She cried – happy tears and said ‘you can sing’! Phew. So then it was practice, practice, practice until the big day. In the car, in the shower, driving my son mad around the house – anywhere and anytime I could.
I was familiar with the place I was auditioning in which helped I think. However, when I walked in to see Dan my legs went to jelly. He was fantastic – very reassuring and warm. He asked me a few quick questions and then said ‘lets get the singing out the way’. I looked at that black curtain and went for it – still hating the sound of my own voice. But I felt it went ok. I think I stumbled over some words at one point. I did the dance moves but really it was all a blur. I came out not knowing whether I had done ok or not and then waited the standard 2 days to hear. It was a YES! I was so happy. Then the nerves kicked in for my friend who was auditioning a week later and we really wanted to do this together. Luckily she also got through. It would have been a horrible discussion to have if only one of us had got through.
From my first session, I have never looked back. When we rehearse, the room is full of incredible voices, vibes and friendliness. I was blown away by the professionalism of the choir the first time I watched them from the front. I’m still a newbie and trying to learn the songs and the dance moves but, I feel incredibly proud to be part of this organisation. I can’t wait to start performing and we have some fantastic events lined up for 2020.
