Earlier this year, we were informed that a charity event was being organised to support Mind; a mental health charity whose motto is “We won’t give up until everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets both support and respect”. Having known a number of people who have battled with mental health, this is an amazing charity to support and I was so excited to be part of this event.
The day arrived and it was one of the hottest days of the summer; perfect weather for people watching but less than optimum for those participating. But we were kept hydrated by the wonderful staff at South Western Railway and we were ready to go!!!
One of my favourite memories of the day is when we’d crammed into a carriage on the train from Woking to Vauxhall (I believe). A gentleman got on the train and sat himself, unbeknownst to him, in the middle of about 15 of us. After he sat, he looked up and noticed we were all dressed in our Love Soul finest and exclaimed “why are you all so dressed up? Are you not baking in this heat?”. We explained what we were doing and I saw this fear wash over him that he was going to be in the middle of some sort of flash-mob in the carriage. We all had a good laugh and spoke with him for the rest of his journey.
That’s always been one of my favourite things about doing these type of public performance. People are intrigued to see us in our Love Soul Choir colours and it sparks some great conversations!
I’m fortunate enough to work for a large organisation that supports charity and the local community. Each year, we’re entitled to claim for them to match a proportion of anything raised for charity. That meant that not only did we raise £1,133.50 on the day, but my company also matched £620; making the total raised over £1,750!
Just “wow”!!!
